Report by Mike Austin: 2/1/2008

The Pacific/Arctic (I would favor the latter) Loon was far out in Lake Tawakoni at 0950 on February 1 (23 F. at dawn!). Since I could not figure out which boat ramp was the "old" one, it was directly out from the ramp which is 0.5 miles east of the Holiday Marina at a locked iron gate, not the one with the old campground clubhouse immediately east of the marina. Despite the distance, through my 60X scope most of the features described by Matt White others were observed. Gray head with sharp, vertical line sharply separating the entire nape from the unmarked throat unlike the brown, jagged-naped three Common Loons with which it was closely associated.. Slightly smaller than the Commons but not nearly so diminutive as a Pacific Loon I observed earlier in a flotilla of six Commons. The loon had a gray back and very prominent, bulbous white patch on the rear flank.
